What can cause Stress?

A poor diet can make stress or anxiety. Performance anxiety is related to specific situations, like taking a test or making a presentation in public. People with generalized anxiety disorder experience almost constant worry or anxiety about many things. Panic disorder or panic attacks can happen suddenly with unexplained fear, rapid breathing, and increased heartbeat.

For example, a student feeling a little stress about a test that's coming up can motivate him to study hard. But stressing out too much over the test can make him hard to concentrate on the material he need to learn.

Stress can occur as a short term response, delayed response or a prolonged response. Let us see one by one.

Short Term Response or Acute Stress
Acute stress is the normal physiological 'Fight or flight response'. It can occur at any one of these situations.

  • Hunger
  • A narrow miss of an accident
  • A competitive exam
  • A job interview
  • A short lived illness
Prolonged Response or Chronic Stress
This could be any one of the following.
  • Workplace stress
  • Stress at home
  • Financial stress
Delayed Response
It is caused by exceptionally stressful conditions in which the person feels helpless, like
  • Natural calamities
  • War
  • Rape
  • Heath of beloved ones
